Reflecting on Your Report Writing Experience

Doing this research report reminds me of the project work I did during my JC time. It was almost the same as this research survey report. We have to come out with a research topic and carry out a survey. However, I feel that this report will be of a better quality than my previous one in terms of the writing. I have learnt to incorporate the 7Cs in my writing: Courtesy, Correctness, Conciseness, Clarity, Coherence and Cohesion, Concreteness and Completeness.

I have learnt the importance of coming up with a timeline for the list of things to be completed. Initially, I was not aware of the dateline for the report and nothing much was done during the mid-term break except for the collation of results and research. Thus, there was a lot to be done when I realized I have one week left before presenting the first draft for editing. Better organization and time management might have prevented this.

I envy the other groups as they have one more member to share the workload while there is only the two of us for our report. In addition, I feel that with more people in the group, there will be more ideas and the topic can be viewed in different perspectives. On the other hand, perhaps it will be much easier to communicate in a pair as compared to a group as less time will be needed to come out with a common consensus. However, it is inevitable to work in big groups. Therefore, it is important to develop good communication skills to be able to reach an agreement in the shortest time.

Hey Qiyuan!

Glad to see that you've learnt to incorporate the 7Cs in your writing. Our group didn't come up with a structured timeline as well, but we tried as much to adhere with the timeline set out for us in the course schedule. And while at times it felt like we had to rush thing, towards the end it provided us with more time to edit, reflect and perfect the paper.

I think despite having only two members in your group, it was good in the sense that you were already good friends. It saves more time in that you do not have to 'acclimatize' to working with him. It took my group a while to get used to each others' working styles.

Hi Qiyuan,

My group did not have a timeline too! Nonetheless, we tried to follow the lesson schedule and make sure we were prepared before each lesson so that more time could be spent debating the main issues instead of writing from scratch. (And yes, ML, I am sorry I was rushing you guys every time. I hope you all did not feel that I was breathing down your necks all the time!)

To me, planning a timeline is part of a goal that has to be planned before we start doing anything. As Dr Laurence J. Peter said, "If you don't know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else." Such is the important of planning and having a goal (that includes a timeline) before any work.

Qiyuan, I must compliment that the both of you have done a terrific job with lesser manpower. This has showed that you two are capable of big things. Furthermore, it seems that the two of you have enjoyed the whole process of the research project. That, by itself, is a good experience to remember for the rest of your life!

Hi Qiyuan,
First of all, I will like to thank you and Ho Teck for peer reviewing our report. I agree with you that setting a timeline for the project is a very important aspect. It makes sure our progress is never too far of the ‘ideal situation’, especially for big project that stretch over many weeks.
