Last Blog

For my first post, I wrote about the importance of written and verbal communication in the workplace to avoid misunderstandings. I believe after this course I have acquired the valuable skills of written and verbal communication.

One of the most important lessons learnt in this module is the writing of resume and the preparation for job interviews. These are essential life skills that will certainly prove to be useful. I have always thought that resume is all about the content. It is only through this course that I realize that the presentation also plays a part. I still remember that I have to buy 100gsm paper just to print out the resume.

The mock job interview is also something that is memorable. I was very nervous although the interviewers are my friends. I am dumbfounded by some of their questions. This is something that I have to work on in the future. I will have another chance to test my verbal communication skills when I present my report this Monday.

I have to admit that I dislike the writing of blogs almost every week but I manage to survive this semester of blogging. Kudos! It is enjoyable reading other people’s blog and how they feel about this module. I have my fun and laughter in class, interacting and learning from other classmates. Overall, I have a pleasant experience in this course.

For my first post I started with a quote “a man is as alive as he can communicate”. I shall end this blog with another: The greatest problem in communication is the illusion that it has been accomplished. Let’s all not stop here and continue to discover new ways to communicate more effectively.

Good effort for completing all the entries. I understand it is often a pain to be doing something you dislike, but sometimes, one may find joy in doing it after repeatedly doing it and eventually mastering it. I would say that all the skills we learnt from this module has greatly rewarded you and blogging is not as tough as it seems? I agree with you that interviews can be terrifying. I am glad the assessment did not consist of a job interview, which I would most likely be most worried about. On a side note, I think 80gsm paper would be good enough. I had the same problem when the printing services attendant actively promoted the 150gsm paper to me. Haha. I look forward to your oral presentation tomorrow!

Hi Qiyuan,

I believe that the greatest benefit from this module would be the valuable experiences we gained during mock interviews and presentations through the course. Otherwise, there would really be very few opportunities for us to practice such interaction.

That is a wonderful quote Qiyuan. Perhaps assumptions that the listeners understand the speakers are the biggest barriers in effective communication. That reminds us of professors who pepper in lingo and technical terms during lectures that they assume we know, don’t we? We would definitely have to practice active listening through asking questions to prevent misunderstandings and assumptions from ruining our conversations.

I’m looking forward to your presentation in the next class!

I agree with you that this course allows us to practice what we seldom have the chance to...

You actually bought a 100gsm paper to print your resume? I didn't know that we have to use that type of paper. HAHA!! :D

It was great meeting you! I wish you all the best!

Hi Qiyuan,

First of all, I am glad that we have come so far as blogging buddies and presentation mates. Over the course of this module, I think we have learnt a lot about effective communication as well as tips about interview and report writing. We have all come to realise that communication is two way. Being a good listener is as important as being a good speaker. This allows us to break any communication barriers and opens us up to a window of opportunities. Finally, I will like to end off with a quote by L. Ron Hubbard, “Communication is a universal solvent.” I cannot agree more.

Cheers

Hey Qiyuan, I love your quote! I feel that communication is a never ending process as man tries to create more innovative and creative ways to communicate. We also encounter many people in our lives, and no one person is alike in expressing themselves. It's been a great semester getting to know all of you, good luck for your oral presentation tomorrow :)

Hello Qiyuan,

I agree that learning should not stop in us and we should continue to learn as we go along in our lives.

Interviews can be terrifying and having experiences both as a interviewee and interviwer, I have to say that latter also has his/her fair share of headaches in deciding which candidate gets the job. From my experience as an interviewer, first impression really counts. Therefore, I believe that we should be confident and impress our future employers when we go for interviews in the near future. =)

All the best for the upcoming exams!
